The Pinglin Tea Area

There are about 2,300 hectares of tea gardens in Pinglin, which means that 13.5% of the land in Pinglin administrative region is tea farms, and 80% of the population are tea farmers. The tea garden is at an altitude of 400-800 meters, the climate is humid and cool, the soil has good drainage, therefore the tea plants have high aroma. Although coming from a low-altitude tea area, tea from Pinglin has a unique aroma of lightly fermented oolong tea, which has become a major feature of Wenshan Baozhong tea. The tea-making industry in Pinglin is unique as well. Every tea farm is a small-scale processing factory, which conducts the process from tea picking, tea making, and finished products to sales.

Pinglin is located at the foot of the Xue Shan Mountain Range. With the Beishi Stream flowing through, it is a water source protection area in northern Taiwan. Since it was designated as a special water source protection area in the 1980s, the development of new tea farms has been prohibited. There are strict requirements on the methods of soil fertilization and drug use in the existing tea gardens.

Wenshan Baozhong tea, also known as "Strip type oolong", belongs to the slightly fermented tea category. After drying, the appearance of tea leaves is cord-like, dark green in color and shiny. The color of the tea soup is honey yellow and green, and the taste is sweet and mellow; when you smell it, it has a fresh and light aroma. This is a type of tea that pays great attention to its aroma.

Mr. Huang talked about the history of Pinglin Tea Farm and said that the place where the tea farm is located now used to be planted with pine trees in the 1950s by their grandparents’ generation. “It was not until the next decade that my father changed the pine tree forest to tea trees.” However, his father was not good at planting tea trees and managing a tea farm, tea production was limited at that time. After serving in the army, Mr. Huang returned to his hometown to take over the management of the tea farm and learn how to make Baozhong tea. Since then, he has won the first prize in the Wenshan Baozhong Tea Competition several times.
